Ms. Claire Kagga – Assistant Incubator Manager attended the Fredskorpset (FK) Partner meeting in Bangkok, Thailand from 15th-16th October 2015 at Sheraton Hotel. The aim of the partners meeting was to share results of a three-year (2012-2015) human resource-exchange programme between Makerere University – Renewable Energy Business Incubator (REBI) and Husk Power Systems Pvt. Limited India. The meeting convened various partner organizations and programme participants from Norway, Austria, Uganda, India, Cambodia, Malawi, Tanzania and Thailand. The partnership between MUK-REBI and HPS aimed to strengthen the capacity needed for sustainable business development in rural biomass gasification systems in Uganda. 42 Ugandans (3 in India and 39 in
Uganda) were trained in biomass gasification plant operations and maintenance during the programme.
Majority of rural households in Uganda do not have access to electricity. Biomass gasification plants are a suitable solution to light up and power off-grid rural communities. Through the programme, the Renewable Energy Business Incubator has built capacity of partners to operate and maintain biomass gasifiers. Currently 203 households are accessing electricity from two (2) installed biomass gasifiers. Given the developed capacity, REBI will continue to support development of sustainable biomass gasification businesses.
