The Renewable Energy Business Incubator (REBI) was established in 2011 as a result of the project “Sustainable Renewable Energy Business in Uganda”. It was implemented by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Makerere University  in close cooperation with The Royal Norwegian Society for Development (Norges Vel). The incubator was initially funded by Nordic Climate Facility (NCF) which is financed by Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and administered by Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO). The NCF support lasted from October 2011 to March 2014; the incubator is currently funded by NORAD up to December 2015.

The NCF funded project had three main activities; business incubation for entrepreneurs, support services to renewable energy SMEs, and piloting biomass gasification to electricity projects.

The NCF project has transitioned to the NORAD project “Business Incubator for Renewable Energy Enterprises” with both projects having the same concept. The project is the first of its kind at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology whose main focus is on entrepreneurship, improved co-operation with SMEs and technology transfer from countries outside Uganda which are all innovative project activities which makes the project idea a unique and sustainable option for development

The project development goal is to consolidate local Renewable Energy sustainable enterprises and improve access to clean energy.
