Supporting Renewable Energy Businesses Scale-up in Uganda: Meeting refugees’ clean energy needs

As part of the Africa – EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP) activities in Uganda, RECP is supporting the Renewable Energy Business Incubator (REBI) to continue its efforts to develop sustainable energy businesses. In particular, REBI is provide technical assistance and business development support to four (4) briquetting businesses operating in three (3) Ugandan refugee camps and settlements. The entrepreneurs are; Adapt Plus Limited based in Kyaka II refugee settlement in Kyegegwa District, King Fire Energy Solutions Limited  based in Rwamwanja refugee settlement in Kamwenge District, Uganda Green Fire Limited and The Portico Limited based in Nakivale refugee settlement based in Isingiro District, Western Uganda.

Objectives:

  • To facilitate expansion of the capacity of clean cooking fuel businesses to meet the market demand in the refugee settlements
  • To facilitate the linkage of clean cooking fuel businesses to additional debt or equity financing for business up-scaling

Activities:

Technical advice

To provide access to an engineering expert to help entrepreneurs improve their operations and optimize their production line.

Business development support

To provide access to financial expert(s) to help entrepreneurs improve their business models, enhance their financial management skills and increase their commercial viability. REBI also facilitated sharing experience of successful briquetting businesses from Kenya, Tanzania and USA

Facilitation formation of a consortium

All entrepreneurs benefit from each other’s lessons learned and advice. Once fully operational, the consortium is expected to include; machinery manufacturers and fabricator, testing facilities, development partners and others to be determined

As part of lessons and experience sharing, a knowledge exchange workshop was held in Kampala on 4th December 2018. This brought together briquettes entrepreneurs working in and outside refugee settlements and other stakeholders in the renewable energy sector within and outside Uganda.
